At the end of 2010 the area’s leading business networking group, B2B Tamworth, had generated business worth over £290,000 for its 21 local business members in the year and accumulated a surplus of funds. The group decided to re-invest the surplus funds in training, special networking events for members and to make a donation to local charity, SPIN.
After carefully considering many local good causes B2B Tamworth opted to support Special People In Need (SPIN). Established over 25 years ago SPIN is a youth club for disabled young people with physical disabilities and learning difficulties. They meet once a week at Tam Youth, Spinning School Lane, Tamworth where members enjoy playing pool, sports, arts and crafts, drama and a weekly disco. Over 60 SPIN members attend the youth club every week.
SPIN meet at a venue funded by Staffordshire County Council, but all other funds are raised through membership subscriptions, fund raising and donations. They exist to help equip their members with confidence, self-esteem and skills to live and work as part of society. Part of their ethos is to encourage members to understand the needs of others; so SPIN members themselves actually help to raise funds for other local charities!
On behalf of B2B Tamworth, members Peter Farmer of The Grapevine, Karen Nicholls of Roar Marketing Limited and Don Hardy of Swan Photography presented SPIN with a cheque for £500.
Sylvia Geldard, who has been a Lead Youth Support Worker at SPIN for 18 years, said “We are over the moon to receive this donation. We can only normally operate during term time and we are going to use this money to allow us to open for 5 days in August this year.”
B2B Tamworth, Co-Chair Karen Nicholls commented “B2B is made up of local businesses. We all live and work in this area and as a group we want to give something back to our local community. SPIN is a very worthwhile organisation and we are delighted to help them.”
SPIN are in need of volunteers to help out for just two hours a week in the evening. Contact Sylvia Geldard for more information firstname.lastname@example.org
